ROP Student Wins First Place in Science and Engineering Fair
Olympic athletes weren't the only ones bringing home the gold this year. Taking home the gold medal for High Tech High, junior Kevin Cheng won first place in the Zoology Division of the 50th Annual Greater San Diego Science & Engineering Fair. Cheng's project, "Ant Lions: The Farmer's Best Friend," investigated the use of ant lions as a natural insecticide that would destroy plant-damaging insects, without harming plant or human life.
"This was my very first science fair project," said Cheng. "I wasn't very confident at first, but I worked really hard on it, so I'm happy with the results."
Cheng, along with 16 other High Tech High students, presented his project to a panel of judges, consisting of professional scientists and engineers, and was one of approximately 100 students advancing from the San Diego County Fair to the California State Science Fair.
